On going Factory Floor Refurbishment 2026

For the last two years Floor Painters Ltd have been working on a local project at a major manufacturing site installing solvent free high build epoxy resin coating .

Removing the existing floor coatings using our own Grinders is the time consuming part of the project .

Every thing has to be removed before any resin material is applied .

Grinding removes stains and exposes clean concrete, creating a better mechanical bond for epoxy coatings compared to acid washing. 

Acid Washing Requires Extra Steps: While it cleans the surface, acid washing leaves residue that must be thoroughly rinsed multiple times, adding significant time to the preparation process. 

Q&A 

Why does grinding give a better bond? 

 Grinding removes the top layer of concrete, exposing clean, fresh material for the epoxy to grip. This creates a roughened surface that allows the coating to physically lock in place, known as a mechanical bond.

Grinding removes any old coatings and is  far cleaner than a acid-washed area, making it a more reliable base for long-term adhesion. 

What problems can acid residue cause? 

 Acid residue left after washing can prevent coatings from adhering properly, leading to peeling months or years later. 

Leftover hydrochloric acid  on  a acid-washed floor is a problem  and the area must be thoroughly rinsed—often multiple times with scrubbing.

This extra cleaning adds significant time before the surface is ready for coating. 

How do mechanical and chemical bonds differ? 

A mechanical bond occurs when the coating physically locks into the texture of the substrate, like epoxy gripping the roughness created by grinding. 

A chemical bond happens when the coating chemically reacts or binds with the surface beneath it. 

Combining both methods gives the strongest result, but with acid washing alone you mostly rely on chemical bonding since no concrete layer is removed.

Manufacturing Facility Flooring Upgrade

 

2025 , Ten years on and returning to epoxy coating project

In 2015 Floor Painters Ltd  was asked to provide a hard wearing floor system to the floor of a engineering workshop .

Unlike usual projects this workshop was on an island located off the Orkney Islands and part of an oil terminal complex . 

To Floor Painters Ltd this was not a problem and we provided the customer with a hard wearing epoxy coating system.

Resin Building Products Ltd , Doncaster manufactured and supplied the materials .

The logistics involved was a challenge . getting materials, men and equipment to such a remote place but we achieved it and gave the customer exactly what they required .

2015 on the ferry to the Orkney Islands 

Floor Specification was , preparation using industrial grinders both three phase and 110 volt machines . All grinders being used attached to three motor vacuum to remove the dust & debris .

Once preparation was complete our proposed system was , epoxy DPM primer coat , epoxy coating with full broadcast of emery aggregate . An water based epoxy to seal in this aggregate followed by a top coating of epoxy ultracoat ,chemical resistant coating all manufactured by Resin Building Products Ltd ,

September 2025 return visit 

We was asked to return to the island to refresh the original coating an carry out another project .

The original coating installed in 2015 was in very good condition considering this was a busy engineering workshop .

The only damage was from where a large piece of heavy equipment had been dragged accidently across a section of floor .

The all area was prepared once again using our three headed planetary grinder .

The original coating did not have to be removed just cleaned and abraded .

Once the preparation was completed we installed the same system like we did in 2015.

Will we return in in 2035 , well I will be 73 and hopefully enjoying retirement but know like all our projects we carry out this one will still be going well for our client a testament to our installers at Floor Painters Ltd , their dedication to giving quality service and first class product installations .
